Is your vehicle having a little difficulty starting? Does it take a couple of tries to get the engine to engage? This may be a sign that your battery needs to be replaced. Batteries tend to die at the most inconvenient times, which is why it’s a good idea to replace them before you’re stranded. If you know what to look for, you can usually spot early signs that it’s time for a new car battery from your trusted Ford Service Center.

1. Your Engine Is Slow to Start

A slow-starting engine is one of the most obvious signs that your battery is declining. The battery provides the power to start your engine and as the strength of your battery declines the vehicle may become more difficult to start. You may find yourself having to start the engine several times or the engine may seem to struggle to catch. If you hear clicking when trying to start the car, that’s another indication of battery trouble.

2. You Frequently Have to Jump the Vehicle

It’s common for a vehicle to occasionally need to be jump-started. This happens most often after you have inadvertently done something that overly taxes the battery, like leaving the headlights on while the car was not in operation. However, if you regularly need to jump-start your vehicle and your battery is not holding an adequate charge then it’s time to replace it.

3. Your Electrical System Seems Weaker

The performance of the various electrical components on your vehicle may start to suffer if your battery is weakening. Your headlights, interior lights, radio, and power windows are all powered by the battery and may slow if the battery is near the end of its life.

4. Your Battery Appears Corroded

It’s a good idea to occasionally pop the trunk and visually inspect the battery. Modest amounts of corrosion on the metal parts of your battery can usually be easily wiped away, but if your battery has experienced significant corrosion, it may need to be replaced. A battery that appears swollen or misshapen may be at risk of rupture and should also be replaced.

5. Your Battery Is Old

Batteries typically last three to five years. If your battery is much older than that, you’ll want to keep an eye on it and be prepared to replace it. Our service department can assess the voltage of your battery and let you know when it’s time to schedule a replacement.

Replacing your battery before it dies will save you a lot of headaches and is the safest option for you and your vehicle. When it’s time to schedule your next service appointment, call Bob-Boyd Ford.
