2022 Ford Escape
Nestled between Ford's smaller EcoSport and larger three-row Explorer, the Escape competes in one of the most jam-packed class of vehicles: the compact crossover SUV. To set itself apart from others in this class, the 2022 Escape comes with an abundance of standard driver-assistance features, a roomy interior, and a state-of-the-art upgraded infotainment system.
Trim Levels
You can choose among four trims with the 2022 Ford Escape: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. The SUV has a low profile, which provides aerodynamic efficiency. The outgoing model had roof rails as an add-on option, but it's now standard on the upper two trims. Adding the Sport Appearance package gives you black 19-inch alloy wheels along with other black exterior elements. The automaker removed four exterior paint colors, but added three metallic blue paint choices: Atlas, Iced, and Stone.
Engine
The 2022 Ford Escape comes with two powerful engine options. The standard 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine gets 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. If you want something spicier, opt for the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard on the base trim, but all-wheel drive is available on both engines.
Performance
Compared to other vehicles in its class, the 2022 Ford Escape achieves solid fuel economy numbers. You'll get the best numbers with the base three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive with an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Those numbers dip slightly with all-wheel drive at 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Expect to get 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the upgraded engine. Also, when properly equipped, the SUV has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.
Interior
Inside the 2022 Ford Escape, you'll find plenty of headroom and legroom for travelers to ride comfortably. Not many other vehicles in its class have as much cargo space. The Escape has 37.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and 65.4 cubic feet of space when you fold those seats down.
The SUV comes standard with Ford's SYNC infotainment system, which you can access via a 4.2-inch display. Other standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot and several USB ports. An available 8-inch touchscreen display allows you to access the intuitive SYNC 3 infotainment system. Upgrade to receive wireless smartphone charging, navigation, HD and satellite radio, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Safety Features
Ford outfitted every 2022 Escape with a bevy of safety features, many of which are part of the Co-Pilot360 suite. Some features include blind-spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitoring, and forward collision warning. It also includes the Ford MyKey system, which lets you set audio and speed limits for secondary drivers. A handful of upgrades are available, including parallel and perpendicular park assist, traffic sign recognition, and a head-up display. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the SUV a perfect overall safety rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it the highest safety rating in all six safety crash tests.
